BUCKINGHAM CO, VA - GEORGE and MARY CHILDRESS CARTER -
Please see Carter forum message 17415, Dick Zieman - With regard to the ancestry of GEORGE CARTER who (probably) married MARY CHILDRESS.The following is information regarding the 1806 Will of GEORGE CARTER whose wife was MARY and of whom named a son CHILDRESS CARTER.Also a witness to the will as being one CHILDERS CARTER -
It has been resonably established that one of the three MARY ANN's in the CARTER family was the wife of SOLOMON CARTER.Mary Ann being the daughter of ABRAHAM CHILDRESS lll.Mary Ann Childress Carter (later Goodrich), having been the mother of PETER CARTER, who married ELIZABETH SANDIDGE, whose daughter KESIAH CARTER married as the second wife, ROBERT CHILDRESS, son of JOHN CHILDRESS (1759 Albemarle Co,VA, died 1848 / 49 Knox Co, TN) -
We have also discovered that the CARTER connection to CHILDRESS see,s to have continued, also due to the naming pattern among the CARTER ancestry. The information I will give might help in determining which CHILDress family George CARTER's wife belongs to -
Dick Zieman's information to me -
DICK ZIEMAN -
There is a 1806 Will of one GEORGE CARTER in Buckingham Co, VA where:
1) his wife is (probably) MARY CHILDRESS, because of items two and three -
2) the will was contested by a DRURY CHILDRESS -
3) a son is mentoned as CHILDRESS CARTER -
3) the will was witnessed by a JOB CARTER and CHILDERS CARTER, besides the spelling, a son could NOT witness a will in which he has a vital interest.END -

According to the above message, there are deeds which prove George Carter's migration to Buckingham.
DEED BOOK G, 1766-1771, Spet 18, 1766 - GEORGE CARTER sold to his brother JOHN CARTER land which bordered others, but in particuliar the name DANIEL LINDSAY was of importance due to his surname.Apparently, the name LINDSAY was brought down in the families where there were CHILDRESS marriages, that of COLEMAN, STINNETT and that of JOHN CHILDRESS (1759-1849) who was purported to have married either first of second to an ELIZABETH LINDSAY, no proof has been forthcoming, only the surname LINDSAY in that particuliar branch of Childress. There were two other LINDSAY or LINDSEY marriages with JOSEPH CHILDRESS on record in early VA, whether of not there is any connection to George CARTER, I do not know.

1896 WILL of GEORGE CARTER - Naming as follows -
1. Dearly beloved wife: MARY CARTER
2. JOHN CARTER - SON
3. CHILDRESS CARTER - SON
4. BENJAMIN CARTER - SON
5. WILLIAM CARTER - SON
6. GEORGE CARTER - SON
7. HENRY CARTER - SON
8. KATEY CARTER - Daughter (Catherine)
9. POLLY CARTER - Daughter (Mary)
10.SUSANNA CHILDRESS** - Daughter -
NOTE - According to the 1806 will of GEORGE CARTER, none of the females are referred to as anything but CARTER, but if you will note in Dick's original message, there is only ONE Daughter whose apparently married and to a CHILDRESS and that was SUSANNA".HOWEVER, if you also note, in the last portion of the WILL, it says this -
ITEM my WILL and desire that at the death of my beloved Wife MARY CARTER all the stock, household furniture and etc. which she holds during her natural life be equally divided among ALL my children viz, JOSEPH, GEORGE, HENRY, CHILDRESS, BENJAMIN, WILLIAM, KATEY (all Carter) SUSANNA CARTER** and POLLY Carter to them and their Heirs forever.
Was the naming of SUSANNA CHILDRESS** a typo?Or was his reference to ALL his children equally sharing in the mother's estate after her husband's death, with reference to SUSANNA "CARTER" rather then CHILDRESS as was in the will?Does anyone know for certain that SUSANNA was shown as CHILDRESS?
George Carter signed his name, but what is of interest is an additional surname which has been linked to CHILDRESS, that of JAMES POWELL as a Witness. The Powell family are connected to the Childress family in Amherst Co, VA.
NOTE -
At a Court for Buckingham County the 9th day of June 1806, This WILL was exhibited in Court for Probate by the EXECUTOR and OPPOSED by DRURY CHILDRESS.Dick and I have discussed DRURY CHILDRESS and what was his connection? We had thought of course that he would be the brother perhaps of MARY, probably CHILDRESS, who married GEORGE CARTER.IF the will transcription is correct and SUSANNA CARTER** is shown as CHILDRESS, then this might have been reason that DRURY Childress name is mentioned other then his opposing the will of GEORGE CARTER.
I have some data which I will post next and that would be those named CHILDRESS in Buckingham County, VA, including DRURY Childress.
Any corrections or other information would be appreciated.Thanks.
