Missouri Carters back through Kentucky, Virginia and England
I’ve waded through so much conflicting information re names and dates that I’m cross-eyed.It didn’t help that so many of my ancestors passed their names on to their progeny and seemed to marry cousins and some, not so very distant.
That disclaimer said, this is what I have come up with and I make no claim to accuracy.
Me, Charles Lee Carter, Father, Tyler Hodges Carter (1897 Fairfax, MO.) -- Arthur L. Carter (1872 MO)– John Nicholas Carter (1819 Woodford Co., Kentucky) Goodloe Carter (1783 Virginia) – George Carter (1728 Lancaster Co. VA.)– Joseph Carter (1697 Spotsylvania, VA) Capt. Thomas Carter (1672 Lancaster Co. VA.)– Thomas Carter (Bedfordshire, England)– William A. Carter 111 (1591 kempston, Bedfordshire, England)– William Carter (1559 kempston, Bedfordshire, England)– William Carter (1510 Kempston Par., Barford, Bedfordshire, England)– Thomas Carter (1495 England) – William Carter 1475 (Chipperfield, Kings Langly, Hertsfordshire, England) and on back.
It is odd, that I go back through another Carter line on maternal side.My Father’s mother’s grand mother, Fannie Josephine Hodges (1894 Dover, MO) was Anna Rebecca Carter (1809 VA.)
Another oddity.Dad used to joke that the only outstanding family characteristic my sister and I shared with his side of the line was a crooked little finger on right hand.I have another distant relative by marriage who’s maiden name was Carter and they have the same deformity.
Also, My father’s grand mother on his father’s side was Elizabeth Francis Lee (1825 VA.) and they go back descended from some Carters.
I did the DNA thing. It indicates English, Scotch, Irish and a bunch of others.I wouldn’t be surprised if there were a Viking aand a Hun thrown in the mix.
