Kay,
I am not going to footnote here nor provide exact years, but will in the paper I am writing on the Spotsylvania Carters, soon to be distributed.I just don't have that much time here for this post.
Some backgound.George Carter, the landed gentleman mid-1700's Spotsylvania, was the brother to Joseph Carter 1751.This has been debated for years, but DNA testing now seems to settle that dispute.I think, in hindsight, the evidence pointed in that direction anyway.
Joseph had (among others) John, Joseph, and George.
George had at least Henry, George, and Benjamin (among others).Only Henry's and George's births (among the males) are recorded in Parish records. But we know that George had son Benjamin, because George sold John Pain land "where son Benjamin now lives."Additionally, the George Carter of Caroline who bought land in Orange, named "Brother Benjamin" in his will. This - and other indictors - point to George of Caroline being George Sr's son.
Now, to Joseph and his sons.Son George went to Buckingham county and was there at least in 1766, when he sold land in Spots to brother John, where dad used to live. The land is easily traced because it was all on Robinson's swamp. This brother John had a son Joseph, both went to Orange co and bought land there ca 1789, while dad John went on to Buckingham around 1795.
What is fantastic about this John and Joseph is that their lineage is conclusive through deed and Rev war records. This Joseph is my direct ancestor.
Now, who is your Joseph?First, I think the John Carter and Joseph carter who in 1789 witnessed the land sale of Richard Thomas to George carter, along with Elijah Carter as a witness, is my Joseph and John. Both were in Orange at that time, they bought land from Richard Thomas, and when the land was later sold upon George's death, it was bought by the Bell's, a daughter of whom Joseph married.
ANYWAY.Elby Bowman believed your Joseph was the Joseph Carter son of Joseph Carter who died in 1751, whom he believes went to Buckingham County, had sons Ammon and Joseph Jr. (they are on the tax lists), who later removed to Bedford County and that Joseph must have removed from Buckingham back to Spotsylvania before going to Bedford.
While this may be Joseph the son of Joseph of 1751, it is not the same Joseph who went to Buckingham. Some Goodloe researchers do not believe your Joseph is the son of Joseph either.
In the Buckingham County tax lists from 1782 on, Joseph Carter Sr. never left Buckingham County until he removed to Bedford County in 1807. In the "Virginia Taxpayers List 1782-1787" for Buckingham County (1782) Joseph is listed for Buckingham County and a Joseph for Caroline. In Spotsylvania (1782) Elijah Carter was listed and is also listed in Spotsylvania in the 1810 census. There are no Josephs listed for Spotsylvania for either year. The Buckingham County Joseph never had, as far as any records show, a son named Elijah. Elijah is not listed as a tithe (usually a son) on the Buckingham County tax list nor is he mentioned in the division of Joseph’s estate in Bedford County. So, the only connection between the Joseph of Buckingham and the Joseph of Spotsylvania of 1796 is that both have sons named Joseph Jr. That is not conclusive evidence at all because so many Carters were named Joseph and John.
The tax evidence from Buckingham showing he stayed in Buckingham until he removed to Bedford, the division of Joseph Carter of Bedford County estate evidence (which does not name Elijah), the fact that Elijah Carter lived in Spotsylvania from 1782 until 1815 when his wife Ursula received land due to his death, and the fact that a Joseph lived in Caroline, where George came from, outweighs the name semblance. Thus, I believe these Josephs were not one in the same.
I think the research shows Joseph the son of Joseph 1751 went to Buckingham and never removed from there.
I think your Joseph may be the son of George and Elizabeth, although he is not listed in Parish records (just like son benjamin). We don't have will records of George either.
Interesting the name Adcock in the family. You say Joseph had a son (or grandson?) named Adock Carter?George Carter Sr of Spotsylvania witnessed many a deed with the Adcocks - they must have been neighbors - and my Joseph Carter's daughter married a man Joseph Adcock Carter after they came to Ky.Also, the Adcocks are in Buckingham co.
This alot of info, I know.It will become clearer later.
By the way, George of Buckingham, son of Joseph of Spotsylvania 1751, had the following cjhildren per his 1806 will:
divided among all my children viz, Joseph
Carter, George Carter, Henry Carter, John Carter, Childress Carter, Benjamin Carter, William Carter, Katey
Carter, Susanna Carter, and Polly Carter to them and their heirs forever.
Finally, from a Chastain descendant:
Joseph Carter II(I didn't know if you even wanted any of this or not)
I believe that the Joseph Carter, son of Joseph & Catherine Ammon Carter 1751 Spotsylvania, moved to Buckingham Co. abt. 1760.On the 1764 tax list for Buckingham is a Joseph, George and a Bayley Carter.Joseph Carter, Jr. md. Judith Chastain abt. 1759 as their oldest child Joseph, III was b. ca 1760.Judith Chastain's father was Peter Chastain and in 1764, Peter was already in Buckingham Co. w/a son named Rane. This is some of the the verification needed to show who the Joseph Carter was in 1764.
Two other pieces of evidence help verify this to be Joseph, somn of Joseph 1751.One is that Bayley is either a cousin or nephew of Joseph.DNA has proven that Bayley was grandson of Wm. & Mary Goodloe Carter...just which child is still to be proven. Two, John Carter, son of Joseph & Judith Chastain Carter filed for military pension April, 1830.In it, his sister Priscilla Burnett (md. Williamson Burnett)"declares she is the sister of John Carter and was raised in Buckingham Co., VA.She knows of John Carter's starting as a soldier in the Rev. War equipped w/a knapsack and it caused his parents and family much distress for fear he would not survive. He did not return to his father's until the war ended. He had been absent several years."
Now, according to Morgan Edwards in his "Materials Toward the History of Baptists in in VA" Joseph Carter, Ann Carter, Sarah Wheeler and Robert Huddleston were among the constituents of Rev. Chastain who went from lower Spotsylvania to Buckingham Co., in 1772/1773.This seems a really odd record because the Chastains were in Buckingham Co. by 1764, so why would there be a record of 1772/1773 such as this?I have not been able to find a copy of this book to read it myself.
More later...
