Kathy,
I am thrilled to find your family has done additional testing and the DNA goes back to William Carter.
This just further confirms suspicions that Joseph Carter of Spotsylvania, will 1751, was a William Carter descendant and not CPT Thomas Carter.I am continueing my research in this area and will publish something (again) before Xmas.
Others on here have mentioned the Carter manuscript, and how it served as the basis for Dr. Miller's work.It is a great tool, but it of course is not conclusive.
For example, concerning "CPT" Thomas Carter's son Joseph, the manuscript said:
"Joe Carter married a Miss Stevens and lived in Spotsylvania.he had sons Tom Bob John and 3 or 4 girls but I don’t know what became of any of them."
Of course, Joseph had six sons and two daughters.
There is no evidence that Joseph married a Stevens from King and Queen County. It appears Miller manufactured alot of evidence, as researchers over the years have found this to be true.
My line goes conclusively to Joseph, 1751, Spotsylvania.Since my DNA matches two folks - and only two folks - whose lines go to William carter, I think this is significant evidence that Joseph was of the William Carter line and not CPT THomas Carter. This of course had been argues by Elby Bowman and Dr. Goodloe.
More later...
