In the Name of God Amen:I Thomas Carter of Kempston County of Bedford ye Older Gentleman being sick in body but in good and perfect memory (praised be God) doe make and ordaine this my last Will and Testament in manner and formForm following with First: I committ my soul unto the hands of Allmighty God trusting assuredly to be saved by the allsufficient merrits of Jesus Christ his only Sonne and my blessed Saviour and Redeamer and my body to be decently interred in the parrish church of Kempston aforesaid as near yee body of my deare father as may be at the discretion of my executor hereafter namedAnd as concerningmy worldly goods and estatesthe Allmighty God has vouchsafed to lend me and nothing I shall leave behind me at my decease I dispose of as follows: First I give and bequeath unto Jane my dear and loveing wife three of my best milch cows, such as thee shall likewise choose, and such beds bedding pillowes coveringes and household stuff as she shall likewise choose for ye furrnishing of her bedroom chamber. Item: Whereas I stand possessed of three acres by estimation ofarrable land in Kempston aforesaid consisting of myne sellions lying together in one piece but containing foure sound acres by meete of polelute Englishe? for the rest and residue of the terme of One Thousand years yet to come and unexpired as by the indenture thereof made (bearing date yee Eighth of June in the_____ yeare of Queen Elizabeths raigne) appearethe.And whereas alsoe I stand indebted unto Henry Wywood? of Ganthell? in ye said county of Bedford in ye summe of amt. by bond, I doe envoke for ye satisffaction of the said debt give and bequeath unto said Henry Wywood y said 3 acres of land with the appurtenances be together with y said IndentureAnd all my estate, rights, title and interest with sameTo have and to hold the same with appurtenances unto him yee said Henry Wywood his executors _____ and _____ and for and during the residence of ye said sonne yet to come and unexpired and _____ allwayesAnd that of my executor shalle satisfie the said Henry Wywoodhis said debt that then this my bequeath unto him shall be voyd.Item:I give and bequeath unto the three children of my daughter Malcott, Thomas Willia? and Ursula Malcott unto each of them five pounds apeice to be payed unto them as they shall personally accomplishe the age of one and twenty years And if any of them shall happen to dye before they shall accomplish that age respectfully then my will and meaning is that my daughter Malcott their Mother if she shall be living at the tyme when the child or children first dying might have accomplished the said age of twenty yeares, shall have the legarie of child or children soe dyeing before that age.Item:I give and bequeath unto my daughter Malcott five pounds to be payed unto her withine one yeare after my decease. Item: I give unto every of my grandchildren eache Willia?Anne and Elizabeth the children of my sonne now? dead? the sum of five pounds a piece at their personall ages of one and twenty years or at the day of their marriage which of them shall first happen for that they marry with the consent of my executor and overseers hereafter named if they shall be then living and if it shall happen any of the said children to dye before they accomplish of that age then my will and meaning is the part or personof him or her soe dying shall be given to him or her of them that survive. Item I give unto my daughter Jane fiftie pounds to be payed her within a month after my decease. Item I give and bequeath unto my _____ and trustie _____Margo Giles? one annuity yearly rent of _____of lawful money of England to be yearly payed her during her life by my executor at the two usualfirst dayes but at her Feast of St. Michael the Archangel and the Annunciation of ye Virgin Mary by equal payment the first payment to be made unto her at ye first two said first dayeswhich shall happennext after my decease. Item: I give and bequeath unto my Sonne Thomas Carter and his heires one tenement in Barford now in ye tenure of Thomas Denton? with the orchard garden and close to the land adjoining and with appurtenancesto the same belonging lately by me purchased of Thomas Pierce? to be sould for and towards the payment of my debts. Item: I give unto ye poore of the Parrish of Kempston the sum of _____ to be devided amongst them at the time of my burial at the discretion of my executor. Item: I give and bequeath unto my loving Aunt Mrs. Elizabeth Anscell my cousins Mr. Thomas Ansell and Mrs Mary Anscell, my Cousin George Carter sonne of my brother Ansell Carter to each of them a gold Ring of _____ to be a rememberance of my love to every of them. Item: I have surrendered into the hands of ye Lord of the Mannor of Kempston on Grayes als Hasmye? bury by ye hands of William Yarnnay Gent. Coppiehoulder of the said mannor all that my coppiehold, yard, land with ye appurtenances forever of ye said mannor according to customs have to ye sustained? to the use of my Aunt Mrs. Elizabeth Ancell widdowe and my sonne Thomas Carter and their heires with privileges therein expressed for the payment of fifftie two pounds to my said Aunt Mrs. Elizabeth Ancell and likewise thus my sonne Thomas Carter pay suchsumme or summes of money and to such person or persons and as or shall be specified and expressed by me in my Last Will and Testament. I doe therefore declare and express my will and meaning to be that the said coppiehold yard, land shall be sould by my sayd Sonne Thomas for the payment of the two andfifftie pounds to my said Aunt Ancell and of the said two and twentie pounds to Edmond Quarles?of Silver? Shoe? such I give unto him and the remainder of such money to the same shall be sould to be payed to my Sonne Thomas Carterunto Henry Hall of Bedford for the satisfying of all debts with of and unto him by bond. Item: I give unto my daughter Susan Woodward the sum of tenn pounds to be payed unto her within six months after my decease. Item: I give to her son Thomas Woodward my grandchild tenn pounds to be payed upon him when he shall accomplish the age of one and twenty years. Item: All the rest of my goods and chattels as well real and personal not theretofore bequeathed my debts being payed and finall funeral charges defrayed and my legacies discharged, I give and bequeath unto my grandchild Thomas Carter whome I make and ordaine the sole executor of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all forme of other wills theretofore by me made.And I doe devise and appoint my loving Brother in Law Francis Bannister? Dr. in Psysics my Loving Friend Edmond Wingate of Grayes Inn Esq. and my loving Brother Mr. Ansell Carter to be my Overseers to see y sonne duly affirmed? and I doe hereby give unto such of them a ringe of _____ a piece; And I alsoe desire that my SonneThomas Carter may be the administrator during the minority of my said grandchild Thomas Carter and I likewise desire that my said grandchild Thomas Carter should choose my loving wife to be his guardian untill his full age of one and twenty years and that my said wife should continue to dwell in my now dwelling house in Kempston untill his said full age and that out of this estate at Kemptston may bee allowed for his livelyhood and education forty pounds now and for the five next years after my decease and after and untill the said full forty pounds paid.And that out of the residue of the said estate at Kempston his brothers and sisters may be maintained and those legaries satisfied in manner whereofI the said Thomas Carter the Older gave published and declared this to be my last Will and Testament and have unto set my hand and seale This _____ day of August in ye Three and Twentieth Yeare of the Raigne of our Sovereign Lord Charlesby the Grace of God King of England Anno Im 1647 Signed Thomas Carter. sealed signed published and declared to be the Last Will and estament of the said Thomas Carter the Older in the presence of Edmond Wingate, Elizabeth Anscell, Mary Ansell, Charles Morduant?, Robert Beaumont and Jo.
