They were married in Greene County , Tennessee , and the following children were born to them: Jane, Sarah, Pheobe, Henry J. ,James A. ,Druscilla , Joseph, Lucinda, John W. , and Margaret. Sophia died in 1858 . During the Civil War , Wesley went to Missouri and was never heard of again. His father , Caleb Carter, had been killed in the Revolutionary war. One of Caleb's sons , Nathaniel , was author of Carter's spelling-book. The John w. Carter's decided to move to Hamilton County , Texas , principally because two older brothers , Henry and James, had arrived in the area in the 1850's and prospered there. The long trip from Tennesse by wagon train would have been far too exhausting for the youngest daughter , Minnie , so she and her mother came by train. The remainder of the family made the trip in ox-drawn wagons.Their wagon-train arrived in Megregor , Texas , early, so the Carter's spent three nights their in a wagon yard waiting for the delayed train. With the family reunited, they traveled to a village known as Langford's Cove (Evant) and there they established a home where they would live for the remainder of their lives. John W. was a farmer -a strong man physically;enthusiastic about his future in the new land. There was a school for his children , neighbors close by and opportunities looked promising. There were entertainments in the community; the entire family liked fiddle music and folk dancing;they also enjoyed play-parties and candy-breakings. But life would not always be so pleasant for the John W. Carter. He fell ill after four years in Texas and his condition worsened swiftly. He was diagnosed as having "galoping consumption" and died October 30 ,1882 at 47 years of age. Jane Carter , left with a large family of teenagers , soon joined the primitive Baptist Church and her religion became her life's interest.Prayers were important to the entire Household. The family went far and near to camp meetings in ox-drawn wagons where they spent weeks at a time. The Carter children married as the years went by - some staying close by their mother , who died June 19 , 1924 , at the age of 92 ; an inspiring example of a pioneer woman who reared a family alone on the frontier.
