Dave, A few brief comments re: (1)Capt Thos Carter's Book of Common Prayer & (2) parentage of Dale who was killed @ Fort Blackmore in 1774 & John who's famiiy was massacred @ their home on the north side of the Clinch. I don't have my copy of Capt Thos' Book of Common Prayer handy but my notes show that Peter made his entries in 1788 not long before his death. I thought he was living in Fauqier Co. @ that time. He states that seven of his children were still living-- George"with me",Peter in Amherst and Thomas,Joseph,Norris,Frances (From whom I'm descended) & Sarah on the Clinch. He specifically located Peter, who I believe married Mary Ann Ellis,in Amherst Co--I think Peter lived on Tobacco Row Mountain where the father of Frances' husband Benjamin Pendleton lived. Rita Sutton's book "Early Carters in Scott Co" has more details on descendants of Charles Carter (1710 - 1766) than it does on Peter. She lists the following kids of Charles as settling on the Clinch--Dale (b1744) ,John(b1752),Charles,Elizabeth & Susannah. She has this Dale rather than Peter's Dale(b1731) as the one killed by the Indians. Dale married Mary Bickley & had 4 kids --John.R,Charles,Joseph & Matilda Caroline(1774-1862) who married George Sallings. According to Rita Sutton's book Matilda used to tell her grandchildren about the murder of her dad & the capture of the Pendleton's;i.e. Frances Pendleton(Peter Carter's daughter) & her daughter Frances who was killed. Rita also identifies the John whose family was killed as the son of Charles(1710-1766). I realize that much oral history gets distorted over time. Your notes are appreciated. They will get me back to the VA State Library for some more digging for definitive documentations. I will also dig out my copy of Capt Thos' Book of Common Prayer to check the accuracy of my notes. The original as you probably know is in the library of the VA Historical Society. I was able to hold this fragile document in my hands & decipher the graceful script writing made in the 1700's. Last but not least I'll borrow my son's copy of "Early Carter's in Scott Co" to review Ms. Sutton's source documents for a good starting point for my VA State Library searches. Thanks again for your contributions. Good hunting & God bless. Your distant cousin--Jack R.Templeton Notify Administrator about this message?
