Hello John,
I am descended from Archibald Carswell, 1880, of (variously) East Uplaw Farm,Uplaw Farm and South East Uplaw Farm. His illegitimate child with Margaret Steel, of South Uplaw Farm (a pattern emerging here!)was Peggie, my grandmother, known as Peggie Paisley from her mother's second partner.
If Grace reads this, it's also relevant to her. I understood, from my researches on scotlandspeople.gov.uk, that Archie's father was John Carswell, c. 1823, and his mother was Margaret Pringle, c. 1841, daughter of John Pringle and Margret Baillie, daughter of William Baillie, farmer of Baillies, W. Kilbride and Margaret Pringle, c. 1782, of Dalry, Ayrshire. WB's father was Thomas Baillie, c. 1760, of Kilbride and his mother Ann Crawfurd, c. 1764. MP's father was James Pringle, c. 1753, of Dalry, and her mother was Margaret Plewright, c. 1755. Archibald Carswell's father John was the son of John Carswell, c. 1796, farmer of Uplaw Farm in the 1841 census, and Elizabeth Muir, c. 1806, of Dunlop.
I'm not sure about the status of their farms; almost every male here was a farmer, and most of the women dairymaids, but I don't know who was a tenant farmer and who, if anyone, an owner. Two Elizabeth Steels, daughter (wife of ploughman, presumable a Steel) and grand-daughter, are living at Uplaw Farm with Elizabeth Carswell in the 1861 census, so the Steel and Carswell families have obviously been connected a few times! These farms all lie around Uplawmoor village. As to where they're from further, or how long they farmed that area...I don't know, though I have read that Caldwell forest, very near Uplawmoor, and land down to Stewarton were the ancestral holdings of the Muir/Mure family, of some power in the area. Is Elizabeth Muir descended from this family? At least possible, and all the places mentioned are within 7 miles of each other. Any information, whether to confirm or deny what I've put here, greatly appreciated. I am also in touch with a lady from Canada who is descended from Archibald's brother Allan, who went to Canada. She has given me a photo of the 7 sons + mother and father.
John, you said you were in contact with some descendants of the Uplawmoor Carswells. Does any of my information chime with theirs? All the Best, Isabel
