According to Arthur Stanley Carruthers, in his book Records of the Carruthers Family, this David Carruthers was the 3rd son (and thus not the inheritor of his father's estate) of Samuel Carruthers, b. 12 May 1799. This Samuel, while a merchant and baillie in Moffat, owned the Woodhead estate in the Carruthers family. David's great-great-grandmother was Nicholas Carruthers (died about 1749) of Broomhills, but that was the only connection that I could find of this David to Broomhills.

Woodhead was an estate acquired in the Milne line of the Carruthers family. Milne was acquired by the Woodfoot line of Carruthers. The Woodfoot line was founded by William Carruthers, the brother of Sir Simon Carruthers, 8th Laird of Mouswald and 3rd Baron Mouswald or Baron Carruthers.

I hope this was helpful.
