Good Evening,
I have just started working on my husbands Carruthers line in Scotland after finally breaking through a brick wall. I have been searching census on ancestry.com and I realized there are alot of William and James, lol.
What I have is Katie Carruthers b 1902 daughter of Matthew and Ellen Hannah Carruthers (married in 1899, they had 3 children, Katie, William John, named after his gfather, and Matthew). Matthew is the son of William John and Catherine Holt Carruthers.
Now here is my question, I have figured that William John's dob is 1850(in Gretna Dumfrieshire) , from census, I found a William John in two different families,

there is the family of James and Margaret, they had David, Anne, Fanny, Harriet Hills, James, John Joseph, Margaret, Thomas and William. This family was in Kirkpatrick Flemming, Dumfrieshire. in the 1861 census

Then there was the family of James and Agnes, they had Eliza, Fanney, Janet, Mary and William. This family lived in Graitney, Dumfrieshire in the 1861 census.

Now my question, the first family of James and Margaret seems to fit my William but I want to make sure. This James was born in Tinwald and was born approx 1810. AM I on the right track? There is only a marriage index which doesn't give a whole lot of info.
I know that alot of you have done alot of research in Scotland and was hoping that you may be able to help.
thanks for any help you can give
Linda
