I don't normally hit a brick wall so soon - this chap only died in 1950, but I simply can't pin down his birth or parentage. Here is all I know about him.
He ran away from home in Carlisle aged 14 and at some stage served as an NCO in the army in Rangoon before becoming a probation officer in later life.
He married Jane Wallace and had five children: Cyril Lewis Wallace Carruthers b.6th April 1907; Ernest Carruthers; Alice Carruthers; Winifred Carruthers and Alice Carruthers.
The two most likely candidates from the 1891 census are:
Thomas Carruthers b.1889, Carlisle s.o. Thomas & Annie. Living in Rickergate, Carlisle, Cumberland.
Thomas Carruthers b.1891, Carlisle s.o. Isaac & Hester. Living in St Mary Within, Carlisle, Cumberland.
The second of these would have been a little young to have had a son in 1907, but not impossible.
Any information on this family would be very welcome.
