Alicia - I hope I am not five years too late, as this is the first time I'm seeing your post. I believe we are related. Your great-great-grandfather John E. Carroll is my great-great-grandmother Estella's brother. That makes us cousins in some capacity though I am not sure to what degree.

At any rate, here's what I know of my direct descendant line, in case it is of interest to you:

Estella Carroll married Charles Henry Renninger
d: Jennie Renninger (my great-grandmother)

Jennie Renninger married Maurice Gladstone Hummel
d: Margaret Hummel (my grandmother - still alive)

Margaret Hummel married William M. Bright
d: Carol Jean Bright (my mom - still alive)

Carol Jean Bright married Thomas Schneider
d: Leslie Anne Schneider (me)

I am married to Derek Boen and have two sons - Sean Christopher (6) and Brendan Kelly (3)

Going in the opposite direction has proven to be considerably difficult. John E. Carroll's parents were Nicholas Carroll and Elizabeth Dizzany (spelling is definitely wrong - it could be Italian - di something). They were both born in Maryland. I have not been able to ascertain whether or not Nicholas is related to the famous Carroll family of Maryland. And that's as far as I have gotten.

Would love to hear from you - Leslie :)
