Hi Ray,

Ok, thank you for the info. I will be going back to Ireland next summer and will continue my search in the National Library. If I know the exact county, city, townland and church, I prefer to go directly to the church for documents. If not, I go to Dublin first. I was looking at Kilkenny only because both of my g-grandparents obits said "Kilkenny papers please copy". I have not been able to connect a Carroll and Kirby in Kilkenny, Tipperary or Waterford. When I'm in Ireland, so many people say to look in Limerick or Cork. I many never find that marriage but it would be nice to at least discover what county and city/town they were from. My grandfather always said he was the 7th son of a 7th son. I was able to document that fact. For John J., I have no idea who his siblings were and it seems he most likely came here alone. Have not been able to document that yet. FYI, you may never find a marriage certificate either. So many people could not afford to marry and it is very common to come up empty when searching. I have been looking for John J. and Eliza's certificate for a very long time. I have written to just about every Catholic Church in Manhattan (East side) and nothing. I did find their children Baptized in several different churches, but no record for them. It also could have been a "delayed" recording. Then, of course, there is always the "fire".

A cousin and I even went to Salt Lake City in April to spend five days in the LDS library. I discovered it doesn't matter if I am searching NYC, Salt Lake City, or cities in Ireland, if I don't have more info on my John J. Carroll then I will always be at a dead end.

Again, should anything pop up on your Michael Carroll, I will let you know. Sorry if I wrote a tome...helps me think sometimes!

Sue
