If you will look at the 1900 Sampson County census for Samson Jackson, I think it will explain the name problem.
Daniel W. Bass was with his mother Kittie and it would appear she may have been Sampson Jackson's daughter. Perhaps Samson Jackson raised Daniel W. Bass and it was an easy change of names from Daniel Bass to Daniel Jackson.
