I can only go as far back as my GG Grandfather, Abner Cooper Carroll in Dyer Co. TN. When he was younger, it was Carrell in the census, but before he died it changed to Carroll, and has been since. His wife was Eliza Davis.
The census results say that state of birth was Tennessee, but I guess in a different county. because they are not in pre 1860 Dyer Co.
There is also an Indian link somewhere, so my grandfather always said.
Any help would be great.

Abner's Son was Leonard Kenny Carroll.
And sometimes Abner went by Abner and sometimes by Cooper
