Mr. Carroll was born in Monroe in 1916, moved to Alexandria in 1926, and was most recently a 35-year resident of Meherrin.

Mr. Carroll was immediately nicknamed “Pappy” when he joined the Army Air Corps in 1940, as he was the oldest cadet in his class. He became a navigator and served our country during WWII, the Korean War, and Vietnam. He was also a 30-year employee of the US Postal Service, serving as a finance officer in Alexandria. Upon moving to Meherrin in 1972, he began working at the State Bank of Keysville and was there until 1979. He also served as the treasurer of the Meherrin Volunteer Fire Department Bingo for seven years.

Mr. Carroll is survived by his dearly beloved wife, Ellen Bowman Carroll, and three daughters, EvaMarie Carroll Edwards of Eagan, MN; Patricia L. Carroll Phillips of Savoy, MA, and Cynthia M. Carroll of Prince George; step-children, Mary Louis Aldridge, James “Butch” Bolick and Johnny Bolick all of Alexandria; a sister, Lucille Carroll Gossard of Palm Bay, FL; grandchildren, Lauren Michelle Phillips, Jon Edward Carroll, Jervis “Jay” Yates Carroll, Crystal Yvonne Bolick Hamby, Angel Marie Bolick Smith, Walter Ray Bolick, Nathaniel Lewis Edwards, and Kaitlyn Elisabeth Edwards; and great-grandchildren, Samantha and Ethan Phillips; Ashley Owen; Justin, Jeremy, Andrew and Austin Carroll; Madelaine and Ruth Ellen Hamby; Tyler Triplett; and Madelaine Bolick.

He is preceded in death by a son, Jon Ross Carroll, and a daughter, Cathy J. Carroll.

He was known for his honestly, integrity, and sense of duty, and was loved by all who knew him. He will be greatly missed.

Funeral arrangements will be handled by Browning Funeral Home, Keysville, with the family receiving guests on Tuesday (today), June 12, at the Browning Funeral Home from 7 to 8 p.m. and services on Wednesday, June 13, at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of the Browning Funeral Home.
