I am also searching for my Carroll's records in Pennsylvania, late 1700s. They were in Ohio by 1812, and the spelling was Carrel. I do recall seeing it spelled Carl or Carll on the 1820 census. This is the family of Philip and Mary, probably German speakers. Recent DNA evidence suggests ultimate origins in Eastern Europe...
