Thanks again Carole,

This William Edward Carroll's earliest known ancestor was great grandfather Philip Carrel, (ca.1775 - 10 Dec 1813) born in Germany or Pennsylvania. He died in the War of 1812. His wife was Mary [?], and they had nine children.

Their fifth child Anthony Wayne Carrel (Sr.) born 1806 in western Pennsylvania was apprenticed out as a child in 1813 to Thomas Day, a tanner of New Rumley, Ohio. In 1826 Anthony married Belinda Root of Granville, Ohio and they reared eight children there. The third child Alanson Root Carrel born 1832 in Ohio was the father of William Edward Carroll. The spelling gradually changed to Carroll about 1850.

It is interesting to note that William's younger sister Carey May (Carroll) Sprague also became an attorney, being the first woman to graduate from the University of Missouri Law School in 1896. She later became proprietress of the famous Vaile Mansion in Independence, Missouri which she ran as a nursing home almost until her death in 1960.

I would welcome any contact with the descendants of William Edward Carroll and his brothers, for my genealogical research of this Carroll family. They are my first cousins.
