We, too, have run into the confusion with the Samuel Carrolls. I don't know how much we can help straighten out his parentage.
However, we are related to the Elizabeth Sexton line. My gg grandfather, Adam Sexton, was a brother to Elizabeth Sexton Carroll. Adam and Elizabeth's mother was Elizabeth Black, daughter of Abraham Black. Elizabeth Sexton Carroll and Amanda Black Carroll were cousins.
A "cousin" has written a book that has letters written to Catherine Sexton Jordan of Indiana by Catherine's brothers in West Virginia. In the letters, Elizabeth Sexton Carroll's death is mentioned.
The Carrolls, Blacks, Sextons, Jordans, Harshbargers, were all neighbors and had multiple marriages between the families. I don't know if we will ever untangle all of it!
