Carrolls & Carneys mid 1800s

I am looking for ancestors of my great great great great great aunts, Agnes (Aggie) and Julia (Judy) Carney. I know they were born in Wisconsin, about 1863, and their mother's maiden name was Carroll. Later, they also lived in Iowa (probably Dubuque area), and Julia died in Omaha, NB about 1940s. It has always been passed around the family that we were somehow related to Charles Carroll of Carrolton and the first Archbishop of Baltimore, John Carroll, but am starting to suspect this was an old family tale. Nonetheless, many of the men have Carroll as their middle name. Thanks for any help you can provide!
