Hi Roberta. Sorry it has taken me so long to reply.
I believe that Martha Jane, aka Jenny, Carroll McGregor was the daughter of Joel D. Carroll son of Edward/Mordecai Carroll (some references list Edward as the first name others Mordecai)Carroll. They went west in a prairie schooner and eventually sttled in Union Co., OR.
Joel was married to Miranda or Maranda M. Bennett. I found a record on an Illinois page with what looks like their marriage. All accounts I read said they were married in Clark Co., IN, but I couldn't see any records. The one in IL is Clark Co., IL Nov. 12, 1840, which is the correct date. Their names were spelt a bit differently, but it looks like a match.
As far as I have been able to figure, their children were:
Joseph E. b.1842
William T. b 1845? IL
M. J. b. 1853 IL I believe this is Martha Jane
Cecelia Frances b. 1857 IA
Joel M. b. 1859 IA
Marrion b. 1860 IA
Mary F. b. 1861 IA
Flora b. about 1862 IA
One report said that there were 10 children, I imagine the missing ones were born in the gap between 1845 and 1853.
Martha Jane and her husband Archibald McGregor named one of their sons Marrion, so this appears to put her in the spot of M.J. She was also married at the home of Joseph Carroll. Most of the family stayed put in Oregon. Martha Jane and her husband stayed there for a while and has two children before moving to Nanaimo on Vancouver Island where his family was mining coal. He had been in the Cariboo looking for gold at some time previously. Their third child was born in Nanaimo.
There were old family stories that she was related to "the" Charles Carroll, but I guess not.
We were wondering if the family had been Jewish because of all the biblical names? The census doesn't seem to list religion like the Canadian ones do.
Trish.
