Bishop John Patrick Carroll, born 26 February 1864 in Dubuque, Iowa. He was raised and educated here and later because Bishop in Helena, Montana where he founded what was later called Carroll College. His parents were Martin Carroll ( born 1826) and Catherine ( O'Farrell ) Carroll ( Born 1830 ) . They were both born in Ireland but the exact place in not clear but it is said they grew up and knew each other as children. Catherine arrived in USA in 1851 and Martin arrived in USA in 1852. They married in 1857. ( I am researching the possibility that the were born and raised in County Mayo or Cavan. )

My own great great Grandfather Michael Carroll died in an occupational accident in Mayo in October 1855 but his brother my great great Uncle, James Carroll who was born in Threnelaur ( Felnuth ), County Mayo about 1815 was married to Rose ( Conlon ) Carroll who was born in Kiltimagh, County Mayo about 1814. They arrived in USA around around 1848 since one of the four surviving children, Charles was born in Ohio in 1842. In all they had thirteen children, eight died and were buried in Ireland, one in crossing the atlantic, and so four survived.

We are looking for the connection between the father of Bishop John Patrick Carroll and his father Martin Carroll and my great great Uncle James Carroll. The obituary of Martin Carroll states that his body was left in the home of John H. Carroll, son of James Carroll and also when James Carroll died, Martin Carroll was one of the pallbearers and one of Martin's son's Dr. Charles came for the funeral of James. There is definitely a family connection but no one is sure what it is right now.

Another family claims relationship to Bishop John Patrick Carroll. Mary Carroll daughter of Thomas Carroll and Margaret McMahon of County Cavan, Ireland was born 1822 in County Cavan. She married Patrick McGoldrick ( born 1817 in county Louth, Ireland ) at Bailieborough in 1839. They immigrated to Dubuque, Iowa. A family geneologist claimed that Bishop Carroll and Mary Carroll were cousins. Mary also had a cousin who was Sister Superior at St. Joseph Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota.

I am hoping to find what the relationship between Bishop John Patrick Carroll, his father Martin Carroll, my great great uncle James Carroll, and Mary Carroll Mcgoldrick.
