Jane, The following is extracted from a booklet I put together about my family history. Hope this helps. --Cathy

"People in Andover with the last name of Carroll. Andover is bounded on the east by the city of Franklin. By 1880, Mary’s mother-in-law, Margaret Theresa Carroll had arrived in Franklin, New Hampshire from Queenstown, Ireland. In Franklin, Margaret met and married Gilbert Samuel Merrill. Presumably, Margaret was drawn to Franklin by the earlier arrival by other family members in Franklin or nearby towns. The History of the Town of Andover New Hampshire (1751 - 1906) prepared by John R. Eastman in 1907 has three references to people by the name of Carroll:

Thompson & Carroll (Alonzo) had a store at Potter's Place for some period of unknown duration during the middle of the 19th century. (Page 164)

"June 1, 1898, A child of Thomas Carroll found strangled with a harness strap with which he had been found playing."
(Page 321)

James Sullivan, son of James Sullivan and Mary Kenealey, b. Jan. 8, 1875; m., Jan. 8, 1895, Ruth Carroll; d. Jan. 27, 1902; 1 ch. (Part II, page 56)"
