I checked my records, and according to the 1860 and 1870 censuses the wife of Hugh A. CARROLL was Eliza, who was born in Ireland. They appear in the 1860 census in Township No. 3 (Scotsburg P. O.), Fresno County, CA [p. 9, family no. 122], with daughters Mary J., age 8, and Margaret A., age 7, both born in CA. Two Indian males, both described as servants, were living with them, and Hugh was the Assistant Marshall for the census. In the 1870 census they are listed in Township No. 2 (Millerton P. O.), Fresno County, CA [p. 189, family no. 141], with just daughter Margt. A., age 16. Eliza is listed as 28 years old in 1860 and 42 years old in 1870. Hugh A. CARROLL, a widower, is listed in the family of his son-in-law, Bedford BOUTWELL, in the 1880 census in Big Dry Creek Precinct, Fresno County, CA [ED 4, family no, 181]. The census gives Bedford's occupation as a "road constructor."
