Since my last posting I have discovered that my gggrandfather James fought in the Civil War before he and his family returned to County Kerry and the coastal village of Ballinskelligs. Does this ring any family bells?
Also there are 78 records of James' from NY in the Civil War. I have spent some time at the National Archives looking at original material. Much is very sketchy and I can't determine which records relate to my ancestor. There are a few records however that have good facts from the few who qualified for pensions. If you have a James Carroll who served in NY Union forces and know what batalion he was in perhaps I have info for you?
