Jim,
I have seen the 1850 mortality schedule for Shelby Co that lists a 77-year-old Joseph as dying this year. Is this the same Joseph you speak of? I believe that John Carroll who lived there b.1805 was his son.
If so this family is from SC where there were MANY Carrolls!
