Kaye, my impression was that they were a North Carolina family, Charles Carroll got a 400 acre land grant in what is now Greene County, Georgia in 1800. Grief Carroll, who some say was born in 1775 in NC also appears in records there, these may be relatives of the one you are looking for. If your Grief H. was really born ca. 1803, this older Grief may be an uncle.
