Unfortunately, I don't think our Bernards match. My Bernard Carroll joined William Walker's filibustering expedition from California to Baja California, and was killed there in 1854 in a fight with Mexican militia. Almost all of the expeditionists ranged in age from about 20 to 35, and Carroll was a junior officer, probably in his early twenties. Then again, there might be some connection . . .
