1. The death certificate of my 2g-grandmother, Mary CARROLL, lists her parents as Martha CARRELL and John CULBERTSON. It is assumed that John and Martha were never married; he is in the 1850 census for Scott CoVA with a wife and children and my g-grandmother used the CARROLL/CARRELL name until she married.

2. In the 1850 census for Scott CoVA there is only ONE CARRELL/CARROLL household listed. This household list as residents CARRELL, Samuel, Polly, Martha and Mary. In the same census year there are about 11 CARRELL/CARROLL families listed in Russell CoVA.

3. In the 1860 census Samuel and Polly CARRELL/CARROLL have moved to Russell CoVA and living with them is Mary, age 11. There is no mention of Martha.

4. Also in the 1860 census for Russell CoVA there is a new DYE family, headed by James DYE with wife Martha and several children all under the age of six. I suspect that this Martha DYE is the daughter of Samuel and Polly CARRELL/CARROLL and the mother of my g-grandmother Mary.

Can anyone offer any additional information about these families. Can anyone recommend a good source for understanding the CARROLL and CARRELL lines in SW VA and TN. I will be most grateful for any assistance.

Mary B.
