Dear Alicemae: My original posting was done under my husband's name for reasons I can't remember, but I am the CARROLL descendant. The James Carroll I am descended from was born 14 May 1819 [date on his tombstone in Cresco, Howard Co, IA] supposedly in Couty Queens [now Laois] Ireland. I say supposedly since I have no proof of that other than handed down family story. I have recently made the discovery that contrary to the same handed down family story/ies, James Carroll's wife was most likely named Jane Dunnigan rather then Jane Donovan as the "family story" records her name. [My sister even gave her son the middle name Donovan !!] I have been unable to document when James Carroll first arrived in America, however, I can place him in Janesville, Rock Co, WI in 1857 with a marriage record to Jane Dunnigan in St. Patrick's church in Janesville. The birth/baptism of their son is recorded in the same church one year later. The family then moved to Howard Co, IA by 1860. I have verified that this oldest son states his birthplace as WI on census records. It is possible/probable that James Carroll was married prior to Jane Dunnigan, because he had a daugher named Alice who was born 1852 [possibly in Janesville, but I have no proof of that and Alice could have been born in Ireland or ??]
I give the above information to show the extent of my knowledge and also the limits. As to Catherine Carroll who married Daniel Hannegan, anything is possible. She was b. ca 1805, "my" James born 1819. It would not be way out of line to have been siblings.
I do not have any further information on Cynthia Margaret Hannegan's family. Here are the names of Cynthia Hannegan/Edward Carroll's children:
Margaret Augusta Carroll
Daniel Edward Carroll
Leo Earl Carroll
John Revere Carroll
Charles Francis Carroll
Boyd James Carroll
Paul Gilbert Carroll
Dorothy Mary Carroll
Frances Marjorie Carroll
Is there a significance that the 2nd son is named Daniel??? Are any of the other names of the children signficant??? According to my information, Cynthia Hannegan was born in Logan, Iowa in 1858 and her marriage to Edward Carroll took place in Logan in 1882. According to a descendant of one of their children, Edward Carroll died 1914 in Randolph, Nebraska and Cynthia died 1921 in Wayne, Nebraska.
Is any of this helpful? I have been absolutely unable to make any headway on finding James Carroll in Ireland. Let me hear back if any of this makes a connection.
