Court Records of Johnston Co, NC in 1763 ordered that Elizabeth Johnson be appointed guardian to the orphans of John Carroll, her deceased husband. The children were: William, Susana, Lucy, John, and Benjn. Carroll.
Of the above children, William married Anne. They had the following children: Mary (md. William Hunt), Bethania (md. Edward Prather), John (md. Ann Prather), Mitchell, James and William. William, Anne and family moved to Columbia, GA in abt 1784. Anne must have died before 1806, because William comes back to NC to marry a widow, Sarah Penny in 1806. She was the widow of Caleb Penny with whom she had 10 children. The wills of William and Caleb are both filed in Johnston Co. although they died in GA. Both wills were filed in 1813. William Carroll Jr. of GA was the executor of his father's estate. The 1820 Census of Columbia, GA shows 4 Carroll's living there: Mitchell, James, William and Ann. At the same time there is a James and William in the census of 1820 in Johnston Co., NC.
John Carroll, son of John (who died in 1763), lived in the Cumberland/Johnston Co., NC area. He married 2)Aly Ferrell. His children were: Sally, Lucy, Delilah, Susana, Winefred, Benjamin, Matthew, Merrill, Ransom, Penny and Aly. John died 1816(will written 1814). John mentions in one document his brother Benjamin who predeceased him and left him land in Tennessee.
To further confuse the issue, we have another James and William Carroll (brothers)who appear in the Johnston Co. marriage records in 1790,and 1792. John Carroll (above paragraph)was the bondsman for both. James marries Rhoda Stevens(on) and William marries Sarah Stevenson (Rhoda's sister, I think). Sarah must have died because William marries 2) Piety Fluellin in 1797. According to James' Rev. War records, James volunteered at age 16 in 1781 and was living in Cumberland Co. at that time. James and Rhoda's children were: Margaret, John, Mary?, David, Reuben, Major James, Obedience, Rhoda, Rebecca and Sarah. William and Sarah had 2 daughters. William and Piety F. Carroll had at least 5 children. William Jr. was one for sure. I think Seaborn may have been another (he names his 1st two children: Piety and William). James Carroll died in 1834. In 1836, a number of the Carroll family: Rhoda Stevenson Carroll and children John, David, Reuben, Major James, Rhoda, Rebecca and Sarah; along with Seaborn (b. 1804, md Chasey) move to Dale Co., AL.
William Carroll Jr. lived in Johnston and Wake Counties. He married 1)Piety Hobby and 2)Piety Powell. He had one child by the first marriage, Hardy Carroll. He had children by the second marriage: Julia, Seaborn, Henry, Francis, William, Cader, Samuel, Mary Catherine, Alexander and George. William Jr.'s will is filed in 1856 in Wake Co.
A book published in 1893 states that James and William were born in Ireland (part of the Scottish people living there) to Duncan and Isabella Dallas McCarroll, that they came to America in prerevolutionary times. (Another family source 1880 contains the names of the McCarrolls).
The fact that James and William were so young and are connected with John Carroll in NC indicates to me that they must somehow be related. I can not locate records that they were orphaned here.
This is my explanation for the confusion generated by having so many people with the same names. Let me know if you would like my documentation.
