North Carolina had a lot of trouble with the name Carroll in their census - Raiford Carroll 1st appeared in North Carolina census in 1820 spelled "Raiford Carroll, then in 1830 he disappeared from the Carroll listing, so I assumed he had left the state. Further research showed different than what you have listed - in 1830 he appeared as a "Carrel" and they spelled his name "Raeford. Then in the 1840 census he appeared as a "Carrell" and they spelled his name again as "Raiford." I didn't check for him in the 1850 census, I just checked "Carroll" and he wasn't listed. If he was still there, I would bet it would be spelled "Carrell." But in everyone of the listings, he was shown in Sampson County, North Carolina. Before 1850, they only listed the "head of household" so it wasn't possible to track a child thru adult years. He either appeared as a H of HH or he didn't. A lot of the Carrells changed their name to Carroll in the 1830 census. There was a Raiford Carroll (or Raford) that left NC and went to Tennessee and on to Illinois - He might have been the son of this Raiford Carrell or they were two different ones, and the Raiford Carroll that was listed in 1820 was the one that left - and the Carrell spelling was a different family? In 1820 there was only a Thomas Carrol in Warren County, NC; in 1830 there were no spellings of a Thomas. But in 1840 a Thomas Carroll appeared in Warren County, NC again, and in 1850 there were two Thomas Carrolls in Warren Co. I will save your message and search for the other names for you as well.
