Could this John Carroll be mine? My James Carrolls b:1807, presumably in Moore Co., NC father was John Carroll who died somewhere between 1809 and 1821. John's father, also John, was a state senator in Moore Co., NC in the 1780s and he died in 1821-1822. His will lists John dec'd. Some of this family went on to TN, others to MS - then LA - AR and beyond. Any connection?
