RossCarroll(1882)MS>TX Harelip

Does anyone have Carroll descendants that have a hare-lip. My great-great-grandfather, Ross Carroll had a hair lip and someone told a cousin that it was genetic, so I am checking this out. Ross was born in 1882, either in Mississippi or Texas. I don't know for sure whether his parents were married, I have not found a marriage certificate in Lafayette or Yalobusha County. I also could not find him on the Social Security Death Index. He did not die till the late 1960s. Does this mean that he might not have had a SS#, or that he didn't need one. I thought all people were issued certificates beginning between the 1920s and 1930s. I have found all of my great grandparents' Social Security numbers on the index except his. If anyone knows why he might not have had a number, please reply.

Thanks
