As a follow-up to my own post, I would add the following, located on the web at http://www.starbase21.com/kybiog/spencer/carrithers.ap.txt

Kentucky: A History of the State. Perrin, Battle & Kniffin, 6th ed.,1887,
Spencer Co.

ADAM P. CARRITHERS was born September 10, 1827, in Spencer County, Ky., a
son of Adam Carrithers, who came from Allegheny County, Penn., about 1797,
and settled in Louisville when it was still a hamlet. Adam P. was born and
reared on a farm, and has all his life followed agricultural pursuits. He
moved to Shelby County in 1855, and to Shelbyville in 1863. He is an
extensive farmer and stock dealer, owns 344 acres adjoining the city of
Shelbyville, and was for many years president of the Shelby Railroad; he is
now one of its directors and a director of the Bank of Shelbyville. He is
a member of the Methodist Church South of forty-four years standing. He is
also a member of the Masonic fraternity, and has been for thirty-four
years. In 1855 he was united in marriage with Miss Mary E. Stout, daughter
of Joseph H. Stout, of Shelby County. Mr. Stout came from Virginia to
Kentucky when a young man, and engaged in farming, which he has always
followed. Mr. and Mrs. Carrithers have three children: Eugene S., Martha
E., and Mary A.
