Hi David,
The name Carrithers is most likly from KY., but check some of the census that your gfather would have filled out as to where was born, even his military records. Most of the Carrithers names started in Spencer and Shelby Co., KY. The name was Carruthers in PA where they came from. There is quite a few articles on the name in KY. The name James C. and his wife Mary Porter C. may have been from eastern PA. and Northern Ireland before that if my memory is correct.
