Peter,
I posted this message on the General Genealogy Forum earlier but I think you may have the information I am looking for.
I researched Sir Isaac Newton and found one of his relatives went to the West Indies where he had a large sugar plantation. There was a Newton plantation in Barbados with slaves. As you mentioned a lot of slaves would take their owner's surname. Slaves were freed in Barbados in 1834. I went to the LDS site and have many christenings and marriages of Newtons in Barbados before and after 1834.
My questions are:
1. Would a slave use the Newton name before he was freed?
2. Would christening and marriage records been kept for the slaves?
I am trying to narrow down the possible links to Sir Isaac.
My specific Carrington interest is in Anne Carrington who married Nicholas Newton 28 Aug 1671 St Michael, Barbados.
