From a transcription of an old family letter written by Carrie Carrigan Outhouse:
"Pa’s Grandfather William [Carrigan] and Grandmother Elisabeth came from Count Derry Ireland in the year 1766 with three boys. Edward, John and James. They started from Newry Ireland and landing in Philadelphia, PA. They lived there a short time. Then moved to Orange County, NC. Edward married in a few years after he married died left a wife and three children. John (Pa’s father) married Katherine Sample. ***
I will go back to his youngest brother James one of the boys that came from Ireland he married Jane Sample sister to Grandfathers wife he moved from NC to Warren County, TN (near Nashville) his oldest son was named William, next-Elisabeth next Mary, then John Sample and Milly. Elisabeth married a man by the name of Shadrick Lofton and Mary married James Mills. the rest of the family married (except William who died an old bachelor) but pa don’t know who they married. Now I will go back again . Edward the oldest who was born in Derry County near Londonberry Ireland in the year of 1753. John was born at the same place in the year 1756 20 March, died April the 3, 1826. John moved from Orange County, NC to Jackson County, GA near Jefferson then in 1817 he moved to ILL where he lived until he died. They were all three in the Revolutionary War. Edward was a private. John was a Commissary and James Captian. John was educated for a preacher but never preached always taught school."
