the name does exist in the UK and we have doc. evidence at least back to the 16th century for Carriers, along with coat of arms and royal connections. So it is entirely possible that Thomas of Salem was a Carrier. If he had been a Wogan or a Morgan and wanted to change his name, he would have chosen something more prestigious than a barely known name such as Carrier - he would have tried to be from a more noble family
