Was James Carrier born Mays

Help!! I have reason to believe that James Carrier B. about 1898 may have been the son of Charlena Gibson and John Mays (mayes or mayse). John was my grandfather and the family knew he had a son in Kentucky before marrying my grandmother about 1901 in Arkansas. Jim Carrier is remembered by older relatives showing up in Arkansas around 1940. He was presented as a nephew, but there are no Carriers in the family tree.
He was apparently a WWI vet. Does anyone know anything about him. He had a daughter Ann Marie who died in Arkansas before the age of 5.
