I wonder if you could be of assistance please. My direct ancestor was a John Carrier of Broseley, Shropshire. According to the censuses he should have been born in Ludlow 1811 or 1812. Unfortunately I can find no trace of him there as regards baptism although he was in Ludlow in the 1841 census only.

In one of the censuses in Broseley there was an unmarried 18 years old staying with him by the name of Mary Ann Carrier. Unfortunately she is described as a lodger but I would have thought she must be a blood relative. In her marriage certificate she gives her father as William Carrier a publican. A baptism for a William Carrier can be found in Ludlow.

However whilst I can track a William Carrier in Ludlow he is never described as a publican.

One of John's children, Oswald Carrier, went to Dudley, hence my reason for contacting you as I realise it is very near the area you are dealing with. I wonder if you have ever come across a William Carrier described as a publican. Despite long searches a baptism for Mary Ann Carrier has not been found - it doesn't help that she is very inconsistent with her age.

Incidentally, I wonder if you know a Mavis Carrier of Brewood. Without digging out some correspondence from her, information in your message does, I think, match.

Please let me know as I could put you in touch with her.

Kind regards
Angela Pearson
