When my parents visited Galax Va. back in the '70's, they were asked if they were "big" Carrico's (2 'r's) or "little" Carico's (1 'r'). My father's family was from North Carolina. He was the fifth child in a family of 9 children. Although his oldest brother spelled the name with one 'r', he was taught to spell it with two. It wasn't until he was getting ready to retire and needed to apply for Social Security that he realized his birth certificate had only one 'r'. His mother told him she changed it when they lived in Baltimore because people thought she was Italian. Some early 18th century records in the MD archives spell the name "Carricoe". I've even seen it "Kerricoe".
