Have you checked out the Melungeon roots of the Carrico name? Fascinating story. I was particularly intrigued by the comment that you got form one person who said their grandfather would never talk much about family, which fits the pattern. If you want more info, try one of the internet search engines. There is a lot of Melungeon stuff on the net.
