Can someone enlighten me on the origin of the name 'Carico'?

I was once told (by someone who was researching 'Carrico's) that because of some difference of opinion, some of the Carricos dropped one 'r' from their name and migrated from Virginia and North Carolina to other parts of the United States. Is there any truth to this?
