why be DNA tested?

The short answer is that every male CARRICO needs to be tested, to prove they do not have an NPE, a "non-paternal event" (i.e., a hidden adoption or illicit paternity) in their line.I discuss NPE's further on this page:

The NPE rate in my five surname projects is running from 5 to 10 percent. So far, out of 16 descendants of Peter CARRICO I tested, we have uncovered one NPE, which is about the expected frequency.Having a solid paper trail is no insulation from having an NPE.You don't know until you test.
So, yes, I would recommend having your nearest male CARRICO relative tested. The eldest family member is preferred, not only to get the sample while you still can, but because the fewer generations there are separating the test subject from Peter I, the fewer the opportunities for mutations. The younger males can get tested later.
The bottom line is that every male CARRICO needs to be tested, both for their own peace of mind -- that they really are a CARRICO -- and for the sake of the project. The more CARRICOs tested, the more we can accomplish.
