Questions for researchers of York/Adams County, PA Carricks
First question: there is a great deal of information on the Web about the distinguished Reverend Samuel Czare Carrick, born in 1760 in York/Adams County, Pennsylvania, of Scotch-Irish ancestry, who studied in Virginia at the Academy that became Washington and Lee University, was ordained in 1782, and relocated to East Tennessee (then still a part of North Carolina), where he was the founding pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Knoxville and the founding President of Blount College, which later became the University of Tennessee. My guess is that he must be the son of John Carrick (Jr.), born c. 1736, and the grandson of John Carrick (Sr.), born c. 1712. The trouble is that Samuels appear in every generation of this family, making a positive identification difficult. Can anyone confirm or refute my theory about his parentage?
Second question: can anyone explain (or even theorize about) his very unusual middle name, which appears on his tombstone in Knoxville as CZR?
Third question: most researchers seem to assume that the John Carrick who died in 1817 in Caldwell County, Kentucky, was the son of the first known John (Sr., 1712-1812). I wonder if he wasn't in fact the grandson of this John. There seems to be at least one candidate in the third generation. Can anyone shed some light on this issue? Does anyone have a reliable date of birth for the John dying in 1817?
There seem to be several partial family trees posted to the Web for these folks, but they are not in agreement. If we put our heads together, can we get it straightened out?
