I have tried hard to connect this line of Dempsey Carrolls with my NC family. The time lines just won't work. I believe your Dempsey b. 1740 who married Mary Hall is the son of Demse James Carroll and Frances Sanford. I would love to know more about Demse James's father. It is believed to be Daniel. I wonder if Daniel may have had other grandsons named Dempsey. Often cousins about the same age had the same name.
