I can't tell you anything about Mary Carraway's situation before her marriage to James Bush, but I did find in the Georgia Gen. Society Quarterly, Vol 36, No 4, an abstracting of superior court records: Mourning Carraway had her surname changed to Bush on 17 Dec 1828 in Her "reputed" father was James Bush. She apparently was born before the marriage was finalized.

I had always wondered if Mrs. Mary Carraway was a pregnant widow when she married James Bush and was adopted by him but the court records suggests otherwise. If you live near the GA State Archives, those court records might have the info we are interested in. Mourning Glory Bush was my gggg grandmother.
