The family bible for Stephen Oates, located online at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~flebbe/surnames/oates.html, shows what appears to be this family as follows:

Phereby (multiple spellings through out document)( b. Dec 1 1754) m. Stephen Oates (b. 1764) on 9 July 1783
Delilah Carraway b. Mar 10 1757
Mosis Carraway b. Nov 10 1770
Aaron Carraway b. Sept 14 1773

There is also a reference to a John Carraway in the same area of the website, but not clear if this may have come from some related papers rather than the bible, but it appears to be the bible--John Carraway, 2 1/2 bushels of corn July 1794

From another source, I have a listing of an Adam Carraway, b. 1737 in Dobbs County, NC, married to Stephen Oates' sister, Susanna.

Now, although this is the best I have to go on at the moment, I have some reservations (though not insurmountable ones) regarding the accuracy of this as follows:
1) There's an awfully large gap between the birthdates of Phereby and Delilah and Aaron and Moses for them to be siblings without a few others between--though others could have died or there could have been miscarriages. John is not listed as a sibling in the bible, maybe there are others not in the source noted by the previous post?

2) This appears to be a transcription of a transcription (not to mention my own copying <G>)--so there could be an error which accounts for above reservation

3) in the 1800 census, Stephen Oates identifies himself as 45+, as does Phereby, which gives a birthdate of before 1755. This works with the birthdate given for Phereby in the bible, but is off a good bit for the one for Stephen--is he inflating his age not to appear younger than his wife?

4) Could Delilah be equivalent to the Hilary mentioned in the previous post?

Would be interested to discuss this with any other interested parties.

Thanks,
Karen Dutton
