The Henry Franklin Carpenter who married Dona Willis appears to be a son of the J. P. Carpenter born c1830 in NC and his wife Elizabeth enumerated in Grassy Creek township, Mitchell Co. NC in 1880.J.P. could be James Pinkney Carpenter. This J.P. was previously thought to be a son of David and Mira (Gregg) Carpenter, but the most knowledgeable person on this Carpenter line, Marty Grant, states that Civil War records now prove that James Pinkney Carpenter is someone else entirely, because David's and Mira's son James A. Carpenter was killed in the Civil War prior to 14 Jul 1863 -- see http://www.martygrant.com/genealogy/carpenter/carpenter-david-graham.htmhttp://www.martygrant.com/genealogy/carpenter/carpenter-david-graham.htm.
J.P. Carpenter and his wife Elizabeth were married by c1868 as evidenced by the 1880 census. There is a 9 Jan 1868 marriage record for a James A. Carpenter to Elizabeth Chambers in Mitchell Co. NC -- the original marriage record might have clues to their identity.
